Panama money is denominated in either centésimos or balboas. One balboa is divided into 100 centésimos (pronounced "cent-decimals"), and the exchange rate is one balboa for one American dollar. There are no balboa bills in circulation anywhere in Panama. The word centésimo is Spanish for "one-hundredth," and the word Balboa is the name of the Spanish explorer who discovered the Pacific Ocean in 1513.

Between 1904 and 1962, all Panama dimes, quarters and halves were struck in 0.900 pure silver. From 1931 to 1966, all one-balboa crowns were made of silver. The massive, twenty balboa coins are also high in silver content, and they were issued only from 1971 to 1985.
Balboas are usually minted in very low numbers, and many are hoarded by collectors and dealers for their extraordinary beauty and intrinsic value.
