Foreign Money
Catalog Prices

Catalog prices on reference materials are meant to serve only as a general tool for information. Amounts appearing on reference catalogs can sometimes be used as a starting point for wholesalers dealing in collectible foreign money.

However, the retail price of foreign money is dictated by current market conditions, which includes supply versus demand, among many other possible variables.

Therefore, the actual retail price of foreign money can be up to several times the amount quoted on a reference catalog, or it can be less than that amount.

Reference catalogs are intended only for identifying and classifying foreign money, not for pricing them. With this in mind, any valuations that may be quoted on these reference works must be construed as a very general guide relating to market conditions at the time of editing.

Invariably, there is a time lapse between editing a reference catalog and its actual printing and distributing. Any amount of time, large or small, can render a price quote obsolete. Monetary valuations on reference material do not carry any sort of guarantee, partly because market conditions are in constant flux.

According to the Standard Catalog of World Coins, published by Krause, catalog valuations "...are compiled from recommendations provided and verified through various source documents and specialized consultants. It should be stressed, however, that this book is intended to serve only as an aid for evaluating coins...actual market conditions are constantly changing...additional influences, such as particularly strong local demand for certain coin series, fluctuation of international exchange rates and worldwide collection patterns must also be considered..."

The very same factors that determine coin prices apply to collectible foreign paper money as well. Based on this, prices on reference catalogs are not written in stone, nor are they to be construed literally. Just as with any other type of physical goods, the real worth of collectible foreign money is subject to change at any time.

Reference catalogs can feature hundreds of thousands of different types of currency. Not surprisingly, assigning a value for each of them is a task of gargantuan proportions, all by itself. Such a lengthy and tedious process can represent a very significant portion of the total amount of time that it takes to edit a foreign currency reference book. Historically, a lack of adequate resources, pressing deadlines faced by book publishing companies, and human error, among many other challenges, have produced incorrect valuations on the very latest editions of even the most widely used reference catalogs.

Note: Any reference catalog about past and present currency is a work in progress. Many types of bills have not been reported, even if they are only slightly different from types already listed. Sometimes, a minimal variation between types will warrant a higher or lower price. Prudence must be used when referring to any published work. The authors, editors, publishers and distributors of reference catalogs are not responsible for errors and omissions. They are also not liable for any losses caused directly or indirectly by their work, even if by negligence.

Only a trained and experienced numismatist dealing in foreign currency can realistically estimate the worth of collectible money at any given moment.
